FREMANTLE PORT - KWINANA BULK TERMINAL II
Supply of 15 x TD-SSP1450H Super Spool Fender Systems

Fenders Australia Pty Ltd has designed, supplied and installed many fender systems throughout the years, our latest and current project as of 10 March 2005 is the design, supply and installation/project management of a replacement fender system for the Kwinana Bulk Terminal - Berth II facility.

The fender system proposed and accepted consists of the following:

15 Units - TD-SSP1450H Super Spool Rubber Fenders
15 Units - Frontal Frames (Rectangular) 2.5m x 3.5m x .24m
C/w - 50mm UHMW-PE wear/friction pad.

Accessories: 2 x weight chains - 32mm stud-link, galvanised.
Accessories: 4 x shear/tension chains - 32mm stud-link, galvanised.
C/w - 1 x SLPC-150 - shock-load protection cell - (per chain).
C/w - 2 x 17.5T safety bow shackle (per chain).

1) Frontal frames in manufacture. A coating of Interzone 954/B44 epoxy being applied for corrosion and marine growth prevention. Once coating has dried the frames are then laid out face up for the fitting/application of the 50mm UHMW-PE wear/friction pads. 2) Frontal frames in yard with UHMW-PE wear pad completely fitted. Pads are fastened with 316 s/s bolts & washers. Frames are then ready to be transported to laydown yard (near berth) for fitting to spool fender units and then to berth for final installation.

3) One of the fifteen complete fender systems being prepared for craning into position for fixing to wharf face. 4) Fender system being fastened to wharf face using M45 x 2100L 316 s/s through bolts (8 per flange). Installation is carried out in- between shipping schedules so as to not interfere with the facility's shipping program. 5) Ship berthed along side Kwinana wharf showing 4 systems completely installed and operational. Prior to fender system upgrade wharf capacity was up to 38,000 D.W.T. On completion of upgrade Kwinana Bulk Terminal II capacity will be up to 75,000 D.W.T.

Fenders Australia carries out regular maintenance work on the Royal Australian Navy’s pneumatic fender supply, used to protect their ships and Collins Class submarines.

The below photos are of maintenance work carried out for HMAS Stirling, Garden Island (Western Australia)

A total of 32 black units (Size: 2000 x 3500L) were refurbished for this particular contract. 6 units were taken from the base at a time so the maintenance work wouldn’t interfere with the berthing schedule.

The majority of units required minor puncture and flange repair work and all of the pneumatics are given a grey polyurethane coating to prevent marking of the ships’ hulls. Once the coating cures the units are put on a truck and sent back to Stirling where they are put back in service, as illustrated below.

Naval vessel berthing at HMAS Stirling (Western Australia). Black pneumatics in service (before refurb.)

1) These pneumatics were taken out of service due to puncture and/or flange damage and are awaiting pick up at Stirling. 2) Once repairs are completed (if required) the fender is sanded before bonding agent & a very tough U.V. resistant polyurethane coating are applied. 3) When the coating has cured the pneumatics are loaded onto a truck and sent back to Stirling. Another 6 units will be picked up and taken back where the refurbishing process starts over. 4) Pneumatic fenders are put back into service and regular inspections are carried out to ensure they remain in good operational condition.
